Shingles and Acyclovir?

Doc prescribed Acyclovir 800mg five times a day for my shingles outbreak. However, after the second dose I had shortness of breath. I reduced the dose to half of what was prescribed. Will it still be effective? What can happen if I do not take the medication as directed or none at all?
